This morning TechCrunch reported, citing an unnamed source, that HP has cancelled the Windows 7 based slate PC because the team at HP aren’t too pleased with the performance of Windows 7 as an OS for a tablet computer.
HP may also be abandoning Intel-based hardware for its slate lineup simply because it’s too power hungry. That would also rule out Windows 7 as an operating system.
While HP has not “officially” announced that they have axed the Slate project, I’ll be very surprised if they did because 2 of the 10 slides that HP showed to investors after acquiring Palm had images of the Slate device – why would they promote ‘vaporware’ in an investor call?
Here’s the full transcript of the call. Maybe they aren’t dumping the Slate but just moving away from Windows 7 to WebOS or another OS like Google’s Android.
Slide Deck: HP to acquire Palm
The HP Slate is obviously seen as a strong alternative to the iPad as it’s a “full PC” and has none of the limitations that you would normally associate with the Apple tablet – that includes support for Adobe Flash, web camera, lack of USB ports, multitasking, handwriting recognition, etc.
